What educators are saying

I've done kaleidoscope art with my students for many years. This resource gave me a few ideas for how to adjust the level of difficulty for different grade levels, among other useful tips. Beautiful results!
Some students didn't enjoy how long it took to complete, but most had a great time! Thanks for sharing :)

Description

Kaleidoscope Lettering uses the concepts of bilateral (reflective) symmetry, tessellation, and positive/negative space to transform a name, initials, or an inspiring word into a unique design that looks much more complicated to create than it actually is!

This project was so successful and so well-loved by my students that I did it year after year... until I figured out we were doing it the hard way! Here I’m sharing my new and improved method that is faster, easier, and virtually mistake-proof! My new method eliminates the steps of creating your lettering on a separate triangle and then moving, realigning, and flipping it each time you trace it. Those extra steps not only added time but were also where mistakes would often occur. Eliminating those extra steps also eliminates errors and unnecessary frustration!

This 28-page pdf takes you from start to finish through three project levels (basic, intermediate, and advanced) for students from 3rd grade and up. It includes step-by-step photos, a project gallery for inspiration, and lots of helpful tips throughout.

Kaleidoscope Lettering combines art and math concepts to create an engaging project with a variety of applications. You'll find it's ideal for working with students' names at the beginning of the school year, illustrating an inspiring word for a New Year’s resolution, a relaxing activity for early finishers, a stress-releaser to pull out after testing, or a fun project to offer as a reward as the school year is winding down. No matter when you do it, students will be proud of their unique, colorful designs!

"My students LOVED this art project so much. They kept working and making new ones - different words, colors, as gifts etc. Girls and boys were so engaged and wanted extra paper to continue creating their own designs."

"This is amazing! I love that it goes through each step with pictures. It made it so easy for my students to understand the steps of this project. This was a great activity to do at the beginning of the year it is pretty simple, but also looks awesome when done. Will definitely be using it again!" - Christine C.

"This project was so engaging that I hooked some of my students that are never interested in what we are doing. This is so fun and allows a great discussion about symmetry, reflection, and translation. I had students asking if we were going to keep working on it and took every opportunity to make theirs better. Thank you, so much for making this fun and engaging!" - Nicolette S.

"Thank you so much for this engaging resource! It really makes the students think about how it will be translated and reflected, and can involve lots of math conversations, too! I show my example and they can't even tell there is a word until I show them how it is done!" - Kathleen M.

"We used this for our Unit on balance and the students LOVED it. They were so amazed to see how their names could be used to make patterns and designs. The other students stood around the bulletin boards in the hall and tried to guess the names. It was really fun and engaging for everyone at school." - Katherine W.
