Two lost, wandering souls and the chance encounter that could rewrite their future.

After a devastating heartbreak, Denton Bell is looking for a fresh start. Again. He vows to live as a reclusive carpenter on his new property by the Caribou River. Unable to ignore his caretaking and social nature, he joins the volunteer fire crew. His plans of solitude begin to crumble when he meets Maëlle, a local who doesn’t quite fit in.

It’s a rough year for Maëlle Haubois. She’s lost her beloved grandmother and her home. The last thing she needs? A surprise pregnancy. Isolated and shunned because of her past and her family’s history, Maëlle stands alone between her unborn child and her unpredictable ex. But Denton, a newcomer to town – and her landlord – shows her a side of the river she never knew.

Both adrift and searching for a place to belong, Denton and Maëlle lean on each other to recover from their respective heartbreaks. But some wounds can’t be healed by hope and love, especially when the past can’t be easily erased.

This small-town exceedingly slow-burn romance is the third book in the Caribou River series. Though it can be read as a standalone, there are spoilers from the previous books.

The third book in the series brings Denton and Maelle's story. The author does a beautiful job developing their story as she slowly brings them together , starting with friendship and ending in love. Their road is not easy as both will need to face their issues in order to remove their baggage to move forward. It's told in the dual POV and has a strong cast of secondary characters to help bring the story around. It's an emotional story that had me glued to the pages from start to finish. It's well written, moves fluidly and is a fantastic read. Highly recommend this book!

*I received a free copy of this book as an advanced reader copy in exchange for my review, my opinions are my own*

I would like to say I believe this is the third book in the series, and I have not read the first two, so that might make a difference in the review.

It took me a little while to get into this book, I will admit. The first few chapters are extremely description heavy, and in a poetic slightly over the top way. It threw me out of trying to stay with the main character, a man, firefighter, woodworker, who did not speak that way himself. The dialogue was a little stiff, and it felt like basically the two main characters fighting their attraction and one saying let me help you and the other saying I don't need help.

BUT, about halfway through the book it really started to pick up steam and that's mainly because we got to see more of the town people come into play. I really wish that would have started after the first few chapters, it would have gotten me invested much sooner. But I did really enjoy the extra characters a lot, (I actually wished that had been expanded upon) and I also appreciated what this book touched on lightly, that human beings can sometimes be ugly and mean and hurtful, even if they're supposed to be the ones you trust and love. That bad people get away with bad things. It's not all roses and I appreciate the fact that that wasn't glossed over. Life is hard and that's ok.

Some things that threw me was that it was set in Canada, I wasn't ready for that so it took a hard gear switch when I figured it out. Also, the deed issue seemed very old/wild west to me, and it could be because it's my job but this really bothered me. In the US, it's done by state and you can just go to your county recorder and get a certified copy, and just having the physical deed wouldn't make you the owner, it's who's on the deed.
Also word choice would be a bit odd, there was one point where a guy 'bellowed' but it was for absolutely nothing you would bellow about. But then there was the word 'murdery' which I really enjoyed.
And then. AND THEN. There was the overuse of the phrase 'licked my lips' or various uses when whoever was being observed. I ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS PHRASE. Just think about staring at someone and they lick their lips. Unless they're eating something super saucy, it would freak me out. No food, no context for it, just lick lipping. Just no! There are so many other ways to show sexual attraction, and I just don't understand this one at all! This is my plea for all authors to stop using this phrase, let your characters express themselves in a more natural (and appealing) way.
But these last things are more of a personal preference/pet peeves.

In summary, was it the most stunning piece of literature? No. Was it the worst I've read? Not by a longshot. It was a good light read that touched on human beings in a way I don't often see in chick lit, and which I appreciated.

As seen on my blog (Jessie's Reading Corner):
I love a good slow burn and this book had it in spades! Denton and Maëlle’s love story was a literal journey! They both have been through some rough times and when they initially meet (it’s a really cute meet cute!), they’re not looking for any sort of relationship but there’s definitely some chemistry between the two. They keep running into each other and a friendship is formed. When Maëlle runs into some problems that aren’t easily fixed, Denton is there to offer a solution. As the story progresses, the feelings between the two change. Because of their past struggles with love and relationships, they don’t really recognize what they’re doing or how they’re acting towards one another until it smacks them in the face!

This book is angsty but I wasn’t annoyed by it. I loved the pace of the story; it kept the story moving and me entertained. I love the found family aspect of this story. Maëlle’s story is the one that will break your heart. She’s had to go through so much. most of it alone. and for her to find a family that accepted her with no conditions brought tears to my eyes.

Other things I loved:

- Max (a character that’s briefly mentioned in Chapter 5) reminded me of Claire Kingsley’s characters, Cooper and Logan. (From Claire's Miles Family and Baileys Brothers series.)
- Newton, Maëlle’s dog. I wanted to reach through my Kindle and squish his face! I loved how lovable but annoying he was lol. Like a regular dog! Man, I miss having a dog! My family had to put ours down over a year ago due to old age and parents swear they’re not getting another one. She was the second dog we had to put down (first was due to old age and a hip problem)
- In one of Maëlle’s journal entries, she writes about her ex and she writes, “Baby daddy status: We don’t talk about him.” Well, thanks to my two nieces and their current obsession with Encanto, I immediately thought in my head: Should have named him Bruno! LOL
- In the Epilogue, Maëlle goes to a Bake and Bitch. I immediately thought of Claire Kingsley’s Bailey Brothers and their Stitch and Sip sessions.
- Also in the epilogue, the women get into an epic chocolate spatula fight and it had me giggling and thinking of Janice Whiteaker’s girl gang scenes. You can find those in any of her series!

I honestly can’t recommend this book enough. I will say, if you’re looking for lots of sexy times, this book isn’t the one for you. Aside from a few passionate kisses, Denton and Maëlle don’t actually have sexy times until like 90% of the way through the book. Again, it’s about their journey and I, for one, was here for it!

Thank you Foreword PR for providing me with an ARC of this wonderful story! I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Loved Maelle and Denton's story. Their journey wasn't an easy one, and Maelle's past was heartbreaking. I enjoyed reading how they both overcame their pasts and blossomed together into amazing people.

I love The Caribou River series. It’s small town perfection. It’s brilliantly written, it’s filled with wonderful characters I want to be friends with, and it’s filled with so much heart and soul I just want to move there.

Lifeline is the third book in the series, and it’s just as amazing as the first two if not a little more emotional. It is a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the other books first. One, because there are some spoilers in this book regarding the other two stories, and two, because they are so worthy and amazing.

Denton and Maëlle’s story is a slowburn romance. They are two lost and wounded souls, and they become friends in the most romantic and funny way. Their connection is so tangible and so strong from the beginning. I am not a fan of waiting for the heat, but there’s so much longing and tension and chemistry between them that I actually didn’t mind. I seriously loved everything about this book.

I love Alexa Gregory’s writing. She has such a way with words that just makes my heart happy. She makes me all the feels every single time. She writes beautifully, she knows how to tell a story and make you want to keep reading, and she knows how to buil a world you want to revisit over and over again. She’s definitely one of my favorite authors now, and I will read whatever she writes. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. I’m dying for more.

Denton Bell and Maëlle Haubois
I loved this line from near the end of the book:
I want everything with you, Chips. Give me the good, and let me walk with you through the bad. I’ll be your lifeline, tethering you far away from the flames. Because what we have? It’s fireproof stainless steel. It’s indestructible, even in this crazy world.

I can honestly say that it took me a few chapters to fully invest in this story. I didn’t get the connection between the story and the title.

But as it came together, it was clear that Denton was going to be Maelle’s “lifeline” but I couldn’t see her being his until the middle of the book.

This story is full of drama, a few quirky, yet funny moments, but also lots of sadness. And yet, Maelle and Denton bring joy and happiness to each other even though Maelle doesn’t see her worth. After years of emotional abuse, and being ostracized by the two small towns, Denton helps her to come out of her shell and accept the help of the good people in town. And as their friendship grows stronger, they finally admit to each other that they are in love with each other.

Without a doubt, my favorite book in the series. I just wish it wasn't her last. There are several characters who need to find that partner who will give them their HEA.

In this story we meet Maelle, a lovely young lady trapped in the past under the sins of her family. She has hit rock bottom and needs a home for both her and her unborn child. In walks Denton to the rescue, new to the town and in search of a cure for his broken heart. Maelle and Denton hit it off immediately and over the next couple months spend time together fostering a friendship that grows strong along with a pull to be so much more. What is holding them back? Memories, biases from the past, labels placed on them because of their lineage or lack of one - but when they are together, all this fades away.
If you love slow burn, friends to lovers this is such a beautiful story and an awesome conclusion to this series. (although, I really would love to see more from this author)

Denton and Maëlle will take you on a love journey with the ups and downs of a relationship that begins with a lovely friendship.

At first, I felt like the story was slow but as soon as the characters meet, you are able to get to know their past and why both are scared to take the next step in their friendship. Tons of past struggles are shown in Maëlle’s story, having her grandma and dog as her only family source, Maëlle is forced to be on her own after her grandma passes, which is where Denton comes into place.
I loved Denton so much! He was such a gentleman who truly cares to make Maëlle feel safe at all times, regardless of Maëlle being skeptical about relationships.

The setting took place in a small town with tons of back-and-forth slow romance.

All opinions are my own. This review was written voluntarily, and the book was an ARC provided by Foreword PR. Thank you!!

This is a wonderful addition to the Caribou River series.

Denton and Maelle are two broken people that really need a break. Their initial meeting is so funny and leads to the beginning of a beautiful friendship. They both desperately want to be seen, loved and needed.

Alexa’s books are so beautifully written with such detail that you can clearly visual the setting and characters. You will be taken on an emotional journey of ups, downs and challenges. The strength and determination Maelle and Denton develop through the story is a thing of beauty.

Congratulations on another wonderful book, Alexa.

This is book three in The Caribou River Series and it is Denton and Maelle's story. Denton and Maelle have gone through so much in there lives but when they meet they lean on each other and become friend's but because they are so broken with a lot of baggage can they become more of will there last come back to haunt them and tear them apart. This was a really beautiful read with a roller coaster ride of emotions and I couldn't put it down as I wanted to see what would happen next. This is the first book that I have read by Alexa Gregory but definitely not the last as it was so well written and definitely worth reading.

Maelle and Denton are both trying to recover from difficult pasts when they meet and a friendship starts. When even more trouble comes for Maelle, Denton is there to help and the relationship starts to transform The characters are terrific, with great backstories and intense feelings. The storyline has plenty of drama, gossip, surprises, big decisions, entertaining situations and romance. Loved their chemistry and dialogue. My favorite book of the series and wish there were more coming. Well done.. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Great book

I've been a fan of Alexa Gregory since I read Bastion and Elie's story! I loved the story of Maelle and Denton, two damaged souls who end up filling the holes in each other's hearts. Both characters had pretty awful childhoods but both learn to love and trust each other. These characters get put through the ringer of life and yet the are always there for each other. I can't wait to read her next book. I'm looking forward to books about Viktor and the new Dr in town!

I read this in basically one sitting. I think that this was really entertaining. I loved Denton and Maëlle. I think that they were real characters that jumped off the page for me. I felt bad for both of them. Their backstories tugged at my heart strings. I loved Alexa's writing style. I feel like she placed her readers right into the action. I felt that I was there at every important moment in the characters' storyline.
I received this as an arc and freely left this review.

I think I need to find me a Denton. I loved how supportive he was to Maëlle, even from the beginning, no questions asked. This was a sweet slowburn story and I loved that the two bonded over similar backgrounds. I also loved that Denton helped Maëlle find the family that she was desperately seeking, especially when she needed it most, and that Denton finally found a place to belong.

This is the first book I was able to read as a part of Foreword PR's ARC Review Crew! I am new to the series and new to romance novels overall really. I appreciated the general lack of cliches, while also still maintaining a classic love story feel. You really root for the characters, without too much cheesiness. A quick and enjoyable read!

This is the third story in the "Caribou River" series and is a stand alone read. This story is about Denton and Maëlle. It is about two people who are somewhat broken with baggage learning to live and love again. The story is a slow burn, addictive and nicely developed read. I love the characters!

I felt that the story dragged on more than needed, or maybe it was just slow. Normally, I would just skim through the pages to finish it, but I was intrigued by the story. I enjoyed the characters and story line and wanted to know what happened. I was waiting for something big but I never really got it, again the ending dragged on but I’m glad I read it through.

This book definitely redeemed Maelle for me as I didn't love her character in the other books. I felt like the readers also didnt really know Denton before this one. Overall the story was cute and Denton was very caring and sweet. I just didnt feel the romance between Denton and Maelle as much as I would have hoped. I also found them actually getting together and the ending a bit rushed.
